A town in Nishimurayama County in central Yamagata Prefecture, located in the Asahi River basin, a tributary of the Mogami River. Mount Asahi rises at its western end. The main settlement, Miyajuku, is the commercial center of the surrounding agricultural and mountain villages. Fruit cultivation, especially apples, is thriving. There are Asahi River No. 1 and No. 2 power plants, and Asahi Mineral Springs upstream is a base for climbing Mount Asahi. There is Lake Onuma, famous for its floating islands.
