A town in Nishimurayama County in central Yamagata Prefecture, located in the Asahi River basin, a tributary of the Mogami River. Mount Asahi rises at its western end. The main settlement, Miyajuku, is the commercial center of the surrounding agricultural and mountain villages. Fruit cultivation, especially apples, is thriving. There are Asahi River No. 1 and No. 2 power plants, and Asahi Mineral Springs upstream is a base for climbing Mount Asahi. There is Lake Onuma, famous for its floating islands. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 196.81 km2 . 7,856 people (2010).

A town in Shimoniikawa County, in the northeastern corner of Toyama Prefecture. The northwestern part is part of the Kurobe River alluvial fan, and contains Tomari, a central town that was once a post town on the Hokuriku Kaido highway. The town is served by the Ainokaze Toyama Railway and the Hokuriku Expressway. In addition to rice cultivation, the eastern and southern parts of the town produce timber in the mountainous region at the northern end of the Hida Mountains. Fishing is also practiced. Area: 226.30 km2 . Population: 13,651 (2010).

A former town in Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido. It occupies the upper reaches of the Teshio River. There are large virgin forests, and forestry is thriving, producing a lot of timber. The riverside is farmland, producing rice, sugar beets, and asparagus. The Iwaonai Dam was completed in 1971. It was incorporated into Shibetsu City in September 2005. 522.01 km2 . 1,934 people (2003).

A former town in Nyu District, central Fukui Prefecture. Nishitanaka, the central settlement, developed at the mouth of a valley in the northwestern part of the Takefu Basin. The town produces rice and is known for its shiitake mushrooms. There is a group of ancient tombs in the hills of the Nyu Mountains. In February 2005, it was incorporated into Echizen Town, along with Oda Town and Miyazaki Village in Nyu District. 45.47 km2 . 9,903 people (2003).

A town in Mie County in the northern part of Mie Prefecture, in the northern part of the Ise Plain. It is sandwiched between Kuwana and Yokkaichi, and has many factories, including the Toshiba Mie Factory, machinery factories, and food factories. It also produces rice and engages in other agricultural activities. It is served by the Kansai Main Line and the Kintetsu Nagoya Line. Area: 5.99 km2 . Population: 9,626 (2010).

北海道上川郡の旧町。天塩(てしお)川上流地域を占める。原始林が広く,林業が盛んで木材の産出が多い。川沿いは農地となっており,米,テンサイ,アスパラガスを産する。岩尾内ダムが1971年完成。2005年9月士別市へ編入。522.01km2。1934人(2003)。

福井県中部,丹生(にゅう)郡の旧町。武生(たけふ)盆地北西部の谷口に中心集落の西田中が発達する。米を産し,シイタケを特産する。丹生山地の丘陵に古墳群がある。2005年2月丹生郡織田町,宮崎村と越前町へ編入。45.47km2。9903人(2003)。
