A city in the Hijaz region of western Saudi Arabia. It is located 65 km southeast of Mecca, on a plateau at an altitude of over 1,520 m. It is one of the main summer resorts in Saudi Arabia, and is connected to Mecca by a highway. It is home to the tomb of Abdullah bin Abbas, cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. It is also the place where the border demarcation treaty with Yemen was signed in 1934. It is famous for fruit cultivation and weaving. Population: 300,000 (1980 estimate).
