His childhood name was Sanboshi. At the Kiyosu Conference held after the Honnoji Incident in June 1582, Toyotomi Hideyoshi recommended Sanboshi as the "eldest grandson of Nobunaga," and at the age of just three, he was selected as the successor to the Oda clan. He was initially detained in Gifu Castle by Oda Nobutaka, but Hideyoshi attacked Gifu Castle, recaptured Sanboshi, and placed Oda Nobukatsu in Azuchi Castle as his guardian. In the 11th year of his adulthood, Hideyoshi gave him one character of his real name, Hidenobu, and he was appointed Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade, and Chamberlain. In Bunroku 1 (1592), he became the lord of Gifu Castle and was given 130,000 koku of rice, and in Keicho 1 (1596), he was promoted to Junior Third Rank and Provincial Chunagon. In the Battle of Sekigahara in the same year, he accepted an invitation from Ishida Mitsunari to join the Western Army and barricaded himself in Gifu Castle, but on August 23, he was attacked by Fukushima Masanori and Ikeda Terumasa of the Eastern Army and surrendered. Although his life was spared, he entered Entoku-ji Temple in Kano, below the castle, shaved his head, and then went to Mount Koya, where he died.
