Riegl, Alois

Riegl, Alois
Born: 1858. Linz
[Died] 1905. Vienna-based art historian. After graduating from the University of Vienna, he worked at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and became a professor at the University of Vienna in 1897. He studied the styles of ancient decorative patterns, and analyzed the development of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art into three stages, proving that the late Roman period was not necessarily a period of decline. He advocated the existence of an inherent "artistic will" behind each style, and opposed Gottfried Sempell's materialistic view that emphasized the development of technology. He also highly valued art outside of Europe, and Riegl's view of art history was inherited by Max Dvorak, who contributed to the development of the Vienna School. His main works are Stilfragen (1893) and Die spätrömische Kunstindustrie (1901).
