…It is also called niyobutsu (walking around the Buddha) or senyo (giving pilgrimage to the Buddha). In India, there is a belief that the right hand is pure and the left hand is impure, and it is customary for monks to circumambulate the Buddha three times (circling around the Buddha clockwise). In China, there is a belief that the left is superior, so monks sometimes circumambulate the ordination platform counterclockwise. In Japan, too, the jiyunkou (the person who circumambulates the Buddha with an incense stick to wake one up during zazen) circumambulate counterclockwise, but all other circumambulations are clockwise.
