A valley in the middle reaches of the Kiso River in southern Gifu Prefecture. It is included in the Hida-Kisogawa Quasi-National Park, and the 13-kilometer stretch from Imawatari, where the Kiso River and its tributary, the Hida River, meet, downstream to Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, is called the Japan Line. The Kiso River runs along the western edge of the Minoota Basin, and the beautiful valley it creates by eroding and crossing the Owari Hills of the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata that form the border between Gifu and Aichi Prefectures, and Inuyama Castle towering over the Kiso River, are like a beautiful pair of picture scrolls. In March 1913, geographer Shiga Shigetaka praised the valley, saying that it reminded him of the Rhine in Germany, saying, "This is truly a miniature version of the Rhine," and it came to be known as the Japan Line. The monument to Shiga Shigetaka is located in the grounds of Yusenji Temple on the banks of the Kiso River in Minokamo City. The river boat ride starts near Ota Bridge, which connects the cities of Kani and Minokamo, and involves descending the rapids while getting splashed with water and enjoying the spectacular views. [Masanobu Ueshima] This valley stretches about 13km from Minoota in Minokamo City, Gifu Prefecture to Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, in the middle reaches of the Kiso River. It is part of the Hida Kisogawa Quasi-National Park. It is said that the geographer Shiga Shigetaka named it because it resembles the scenery of the Rhine River in Germany. The "Japanese Rhine Boat Cruise" is famous, where you go down the rapids in a boat while getting splashed with water.
