An asteroid. Discovered by W. Baade in 1920. Registration number 944 given to asteroids with a confirmed orbit. Its orbit is an ellipse with an eccentricity of 0.657, with the perihelion near the orbit of Mars and the aphelion near the orbit of Saturn. It is the largest of all asteroids, and therefore its orbital period is 13.95 years, the longest of all asteroids. It sometimes comes very close to Jupiter, and the orbital inclination of 42.5°, the largest of all asteroids, may be the result of this. Its average apparent magnitude at opposition is 18.0, and its brightness suggests that its diameter is about 24 to 48 km.
