Tarahumara - Tarahumara (English spelling)

Tarahumara - Tarahumara (English spelling)
Indigenous people of Uto-Aztec descent who live in the dry mountain and hilly areas of Chihuahua in northern Mexico. Linguistically they are close to the Yaqui, and culturally they are similar to the Huichol. Many of the population of about 75,000 also speak Spanish. The Tarahumara are made up of three subcultural groups and do not form a political unity as a whole. They cultivate corn, beans, pumpkins, and tomatoes, as well as raising goats and cattle, with hunting and gathering still playing a secondary role. In summer, they live in plank houses in the cool mountains, forming household groups called rancherias, but in winter, they spend their time with their livestock in the warm valleys, in mud-brick or stone houses or caves, practicing a kind of transhumance.
