Land tortoise (land turtle)

Japanese: リクガメ(陸亀) - リクガメ（英語表記）land tortoise

A general term for land turtles belonging to the family Testudinidae. About 41 species are found in southern Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, southern Asia, and the Americas. There are many large species, and the genus Geochelone in particular includes the two giant tortoises (illustration, illustration), the largest of all land turtles, with a carapace length of 1.2 m, the African Spurred Tortoise G. sulcata , the Leopard Tortoise G. pardalis , which can reach a carapace length of 65 cm, and the South American Red-footed Tortoise G. carbonaria , which can reach a carapace length of 50 cm.

リクガメ科Testudinidaeに属する陸生カメ類の総称。41種ほどがヨーロッパ南部，サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカ，マダガスカル，アジア南部，アメリカ大陸に分布。大型種が多く，とくにリクガメ属Geocheloneには，リクガメでは最大のゾウガメ（イラスト，イラスト）2種の甲長1.2mをはじめ，アフリカ産のケヅメリクガメG.sulcataが甲長75cm，ヒョウモンリクガメG.pardalisが65cm，南アメリカ産アカアシリクガメG.carbonariaなどが50cmに達する。
