Erabutoxin

A strong neurotoxic protein, a component of the venom of the black-striped sea snake , Laticauda semifasciata . Three types are known, a, b, and c, all of which are single-chain polypeptides of 62 amino acids with four disulfide bonds. Molecular weight 7 x 10 ³ . Erabutoxin b differs from a by one amino acid, and c differs from b by a further amino acid. It binds to receptors in opposition to acetylcholine, blocking the transmission of stimuli between nerves and muscles. Approximately 80 types of similar neurotoxic proteins have been isolated from the venom of many sea snakes and elapids. LD ₅₀ 0.07 mg (intramuscular injection, rats).
