Tadakatsu Ina

Year of birth: Unknown. Kanto District Magistrate in the early Edo period. Commonly known as Hanzaemon. Eldest son of Ina Tadaharu. In 1632, he had his first audience with Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. In 1645, he became the Kanto District Magistrate. In 1650, he inspected the flooded areas of the five Kinai regions, as well as Omi, Ise, and Mino, and worked to restore them. In 1653, he inherited the position of Kanto District Magistrate. He inherited his father's estate of 7,000 koku, of which he held 3,960 koku as his own fief and divided the rest between his two younger brothers. The following year, as Suido Magistrate, he took over his father Tadaharu's business and completed the Tamagawa Aqueduct, which provided drinking water for the citizens of Edo. He then dug the Kasai Irrigation Canal (Saitama Prefecture, Tokyo) and the Biwa Tamei Irrigation Canal (Saitama Prefecture). He also completed the Eastward Project to divert the Tone River, which had flowed into Edo Bay, to the Choshiguchi mouth. In 1661, he promoted the development of new fields in Musashi, Shimousa, and Hitachi. In 1664, he also assumed control of the shogunate's 120,000 koku of land in Shinobu and Date counties in Mutsu Province. He served as the governor for 11 years and 8 months.

江戸前期の関東郡代。通称半左衛門。伊奈忠治の長男。寛永9(1632)年はじめて将軍徳川家光に拝謁。正保2(1645)年関東の代官となる。慶安3(1650)年五畿内および近江,伊勢,美濃の洪水地域を査察し修復に努めた。承応2(1653)年,関東郡代職を世襲。父の遺領7000石を相続したが,内3960石を知行し,他を弟2人に分与する。翌3年に水道奉行として,父忠治の事業を継承し江戸市民の飲料水となる玉川上水を完成。次いで葛西用水(埼玉県,東京都)や琵琶溜井用水(埼玉県)を開削。また江戸湾に入っていた利根川を東遷事業により,銚子口へ流れるようにした。寛文1(1661)年には武蔵,下総,常陸の新田開発を推進。同4年に陸奥国信夫郡,伊達郡のうち幕領12万石の支配を兼務した。郡代在任11年8カ月。<参考文献>本間清利『関東郡代』,『川口市史/通史編』上
