Fakhr al-Din II

Fakhr al-Din II
1572‐1635
Amir (governor) of the Ma'n family, a notable Druze dynasty in Lebanon. The Ma'n family had held control over the mountainous region of southern Lebanon since his grandfather's generation, but Fakhr al-Din was a skilled political strategist who allied with influential members of the Ottoman central government, defeated political opponents such as the Kurds one after another, and achieved unified control over Lebanon, including the coast. Furthermore, at the height of his power (around 1630), his Lebanese influence extended from northern Syria in the north to Palestine in the south. However, his growing power posed a threat to the Ottoman government, and he was defeated by a punitive force ordered by the central government in 1633, and executed in Istanbul in 1635.
