A private Christian women's university in Seoul, Korea. It began as Ewha Academy, founded in 1886 by Mrs. WB Scranton, an American Methodist missionary. The name "Ewha" was bestowed by Queen Min (Empress Myeongseong). In a Confucian culture that was reluctant to provide education for women, the university was a pioneer and contributed to improving the status of women. In 1910, a university department was established, and in 1915, an early childhood education department was established, and in 1925, it became Ewha Women's College. Towards the end of the colonial period, it was temporarily relegated to a training center for young women and leaders, but after liberation, it became a comprehensive university in 1946.
