Rigas (English spelling)

A Greek Enlightenment thinker and revolutionary. He is also known as the Greek Jacobin and is considered to be one of the founders of modern Greek thought, along with Korais. He was born into a merchant family in Thessaly, but the details of his upbringing are unknown. Rigas was also his pen name. In 1774, he went to Istanbul and became secretary to the Phanariot Ypsilandis family. In the 1780s, he moved to Wallachia and served as secretary to the Wallachian prince, but he also taught himself foreign languages and ideas, and frequented the French consulate there, staying informed about revolutionary France.

ギリシアの啓蒙思想家，革命家。ギリシアのジャコバンともいわれ，コライスと並び称される近代ギリシア思想の創始者。テッサリアの商人の家に生まれたが，その生い立ちについて詳細はわかっていない。リガスという名も彼のペンネームである。1774年イスタンブールへ出，ファナリオットのイプシランディス家の秘書となった。80年代にワラキアへ移住し，ワラキア公の秘書などを務めたが，独学で外国語や外国の思想を学び，同地のフランス領事館へも出入りして革命フランスの情報にも通じていた。
