1757‐98 A Greek Enlightenment thinker and revolutionary. He is also known as the Greek Jacobin and is considered to be one of the founders of modern Greek thought, along with Korais. He was born into a merchant family in Thessaly, but the details of his upbringing are unknown. Rigas was also his pen name. In 1774, he went to Istanbul and became secretary to the Phanariot Ypsilandis family. In the 1780s, he moved to Wallachia and served as secretary to the Wallachian prince, but he also taught himself foreign languages and ideas, and frequented the French consulate there, staying informed about revolutionary France.
