…Influenced by Soseki's Ten Nights of Dreams and the works of ETA Hoffmann, he wrote short stories and short stories that channeled the anxiety of existence into dreams and fantasies, which he published from 1921 onwards and attracted some attention. While publishing works such as The Way of the Dead (1922) and The Ceremony of the Entry into Port Arthur (1934), he also pioneered a unique genre of essays with Essays on the Garden of Demons (1933), its sequel (1934), and The Fool's Train (1952). His exquisite balance of sharp observations and a playful style of writing is unparalleled in modern Japanese literature, and it is difficult to say that he has been adequately positioned in conventional literary history. …
