During the British colonial period, modern Western medicine was introduced and the status of traditional medicine was diminished, but after independence the government adopted a policy of reviving traditional medicine, and many Ayurvedic universities and hospitals were established, allowing traditional doctors to practice with the same qualifications as Western doctors.
