[Died] c. 393 A poet from the late Roman Empire, the founder of Christian secular literature. After serving as a teacher of grammar and rhetoric in Bordeaux for 30 years, he became the tutor of the future emperor Gratian and participated in the war against Germania. He served as governor of various provinces, was appointed consul in 379, and after retiring he devoted himself to writing in his hometown. Although he was a Christian, he had no deep religious feelings, and wrote poems on all kinds of themes in various rhythms, but there is a feeling of amateurish formal play. His representative works are Ephēmeris, a collection of poems depicting his own daily life, and Mosella (370), which praises the beauty of nature through the rhythm of epic poetry.

ローマ帝政末期の詩人，キリスト教徒の世俗文学の始祖。ボルドーで文法修辞の教師を 30年つとめてから，のちの皇帝グラチアヌスの師傅となり，対ゲルマニア戦に参加。属州各地の知事を歴任，379年執政官に任じられ，引退後は故郷で文筆に専念。キリスト教徒であったが宗教感情に深みはなく，さまざまな韻律であらゆるテーマの詩を作ったが，しろうとの形式遊戯の感がある。代表作は，彼自身の日常生活を描いた詩集『日記』 Ephēmerisと，叙事詩の韻律によって自然美を嘆賞した『モーゼル川』 Mosella (370) 。
