[Raw] 310 approx. Bordeaux [Died] c. 393 A poet from the late Roman Empire, the founder of Christian secular literature. After serving as a teacher of grammar and rhetoric in Bordeaux for 30 years, he became the tutor of the future emperor Gratian and participated in the war against Germania. He served as governor of various provinces, was appointed consul in 379, and after retiring he devoted himself to writing in his hometown. Although he was a Christian, he had no deep religious feelings, and wrote poems on all kinds of themes in various rhythms, but there is a feeling of amateurish formal play. His representative works are Ephēmeris, a collection of poems depicting his own daily life, and Mosella (370), which praises the beauty of nature through the rhythm of epic poetry.
