Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

There are many examples of paintings depicting the post stations between Edo and Kyoto in ukiyo-e prints, and they have a long history. The oldest examples currently confirmed are said to be early hand-painted ukiyo-e prints that were often drawn around the Kan'ei period (1624-1644) in the early Edo period. In the middle period, there was Hishikawa Moronobu's "Tokaido Bunkan Ezu" (Eds of the Tokaido Route), published in 1690 (Genroku 3), a bird's-eye view of the road with detailed depictions of post stations and famous places, and as the title suggests, it is believed to have been used during actual travel. In the latter half of the Edo period, traffic on the Tokaido road became even more active, and Illustrated Maps of Famous Places in each area were published. "Tokaido Meisho Zue" was published in 1797 (Kansei 9), and as interest in travel among the general public increased, many ukiyo-e series on the Tokaido road were published. During this period, Katsushika Hokusai was the first to focus on the Tōkaidō and produce works that depicted the traffic at each post station and the customs of travelers in six series that he produced from the Kyowa era (1801-1804) through the early Bunka era (1804-1818). Hokusai also produced a large-format bird's-eye view map titled "Iranhan: List of Famous Places along the Tōkaidō" in 1818 (Bunsei 1).

After Hokusai, the best-known Tokaido artist was Utagawa Hiroshige, who also painted about 40 series in his lifetime. His breakthrough work was the 55-panel "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" (published 1834-1835, commonly known as the Hoeido edition), published by Hoeido and Senkakudo. It is said that the paintings were based on actual sketches he made when he went to Kyoto in 1832 (Tenpo 3) to participate in the procession for the shogunate's Hassaku Imperial Horse Presentation. What is distinctive about Hiroshige's works, including "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" (Gyosho Tokaido) and "Tokaido" (Reisho Tokaido), is that, unlike previous artists, he focused on the scenery of each road.

Due to this huge popularity, the Tokaido was depicted from various angles by many artists from the end of the Edo period through to the Meiji period, becoming one of the important subjects of ukiyo-e and completing the landscape painting genre in ukiyo-e. Among the many artists who depicted the Tokaido, those who left distinctive series include Keisai Eisen, Hiroshige II, Utagawa Toyokuni III, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Yoshitora, and Toyohara Kunichika, and this vigorous production continued until around the beginning of the Meiji period.

江戸―京都間の宿駅を描いた絵画作品で、浮世絵にその例がきわめて多く、その歴史も古い。現在確認されるものとしては、江戸初期の寛永(かんえい)年間（1624～1644）ごろに初期肉筆浮世絵としてたびたび描かれたのがもっとも古い例とされる。中期になると、1690年（元禄3）刊行の菱川師宣(ひしかわもろのぶ)『東海道分間絵図』5帖(じょう)があり、街道の宿場や名所などが詳細に描かれた鳥瞰(ちょうかん)図で、外題が示すように実際に旅行のおりに使用されたものとみられる。江戸も後半期に入ると、東海道の往来は一段と盛んとなり、各地の名所図会が刊行された。1797年（寛政9）には『東海道名所図会』も版行され、一般庶民間での旅への関心の高まりとともに、浮世絵にも数多くの東海道のシリーズが出版されるようになった。この時期、もっとも早く東海道に注目して作品を発表したのは葛飾北斎(かつしかほくさい)で、享和(きょうわ)年間（1801～1804）から文化(ぶんか)年間（1804～1818）初期にかけて6種ものシリーズで各宿場の往来や旅人の風俗などを描いた。北斎には、ほかに1818年（文政1）に大々判(おおおおばん)の『東海道名所一覧』という鳥瞰図もある。

　北斎ののち、東海道の絵師としてもっともよく知られるのは歌川広重(ひろしげ)で、彼もまた生涯に約40種のシリーズを描いた。出世作となったのは保永(ほうえい)堂と僊鶴(せんかく)堂によって出版された『東海道五拾三次』全55枚（1834～1835刊。俗に保永堂版とよばれる）で、1832年（天保3）幕府の八朔御馬献上(はっさくおうまけんじょう)の行列に加わり、京に上ったおりの実際のスケッチを基に作画したと伝えられる。広重の特色は、『東海道五十三次之内』（行書東海道）、『東海道』（隷書(れいしょ)東海道）などを含めて、従来の絵師とは異なり、各街道の景観に主眼が置かれていることであろう。

　その大流行により、以降、東海道は幕末から明治にかけて多くの絵師によってさまざまな角度から描かれ、浮世絵における重要な題材の一つとなり、浮世絵に風景画のジャンルを完成させることとなった。東海道を描いた多くの絵師のなかで特色あるシリーズを残した絵師としては、渓斎英泉(けいさいえいせん)、2世広重、3世歌川豊国(とよくに)、歌川国芳(くによし)、歌川芳虎(よしとら)、豊原国周(とよはらくにちか)などがあげられ、こうした旺盛(おうせい)な制作は明治初年ごろまで続いている。
