The capital of Acre State in northwest Brazil. Population 167,457 (1991). Close to the border with Bolivia. 581 km to Porto Velho and 3,132 km to Brasilia by national road. The Trans-Amazon Highway passes through here before reaching the Peruvian border. It is the center of the rubber and Brazilian chestnut industries, and is home to the Municipal Tropical Plant Research Station and a base for forest resource conservation.
