A film and theater production, distribution, and exhibition company affiliated with Hankyu. In 1932, Tokyo Takarazuka Theater was established, and in 1938, the Imperial Theater was acquired. In 1943, the company merged with Toho Films (established in 1937 with PCL Films Productions as its core) to form its current name. It grew rapidly with a producer system. A labor dispute at the studio split the union, and Shintoho was established in 1947, but in 1948, a Toho dispute occurred. However, movies reached their peak in the 1950s, with comedies about office workers and monster movies such as "Godzilla" becoming hits, and they went into decline from the 1960s onwards, but films such as "The Irresponsible Man" by Eto Ueki and "Young Master" by Yuzo Kayama became popular and were made into series. In addition to modern plays, the theater division began to stage kabuki and musicals. In recent years, the company has maintained an overwhelming lead in the distribution of Japanese films, including the anime films of director Hayao Miyazaki. It focuses on cinema complexes. Head office and studios in Tokyo. Capital in 2011 was 10.3 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending February 2011 were 198.9 billion yen. 阪急系の映画・演劇の製作・配給・興行会社。1932年東京宝塚劇場設立，1938年帝国劇場を傘下にし，1943年に東宝映画（1937年PCL映画製作所を中心に設立）と合併，現社名となる。プロデューサー・システムで急成長。撮影所の労働争議によって組合が分裂し1947年新東宝を設立，1948年には東宝争議が起きた。しかし，映画は1950年代に全盛時代を迎えサラリーマン喜劇や《ゴジラ》などの怪獣映画がヒット，1960年代以降は斜陽を迎えるが，植木等の《無責任男》や加山雄三の《若大将》などが人気となりシリーズ化した。演劇部門では現代劇のほかに歌舞伎やミュージカルも上演するようになった。近年の宮崎駿監督のアニメ映画など邦画配給で圧倒的首位をキープ。シネマ・コンプレックスに注力。本社・撮影所東京。2011年資本金103億円，2011年２月期売上高1989億円。売上構成（％）は，映画64，演劇７，不動産28，その他１。
