Oe Mochitoki

Japanese:
Oe Mochitoki
Year of death: 24 July 1010 (5 September 1010)
Year of birth: Tenryaku 9 (955)
A scholar of the mid-Heian period. Junior Fourth Rank, Lower. Son of Osumi no Kami Nakanobu. At one point, he changed his surname to Yuge, but later reverted to his original surname. In his early 30s, he passed the civil service examination, and after serving as Jibu Shoyu and Bunsho Hakase, he became Shikibu Gon Daifu. He excelled in Chinese poetry, and during the reign of Emperor Ichijo (986-1011), he was one of the most famous writers in the world, along with Oe no Masahira and Ki no Narihira, and competed with each other in poetic talent. Emperor Ichijo tried to appoint Igen to the position of Kurandoh, but Fujiwara no Michinaga opposed it, and it did not come to fruition. Oe no Masafusa's assessment of Igen was that his style of poetry was free-flowing, innovative and exciting, but ignored the rules, and this and other assessments of Igen are found in the Godansho. Although the Igenshu has not been handed down to the present day, his works remain in Honcho Bunsui and other publications.
