Heart diseases associated with rheumatic fever are collectively called rheumatic carditis, which includes rheumatic carditis and its sequelae, rheumatic valvular disease. Rheumatic carditis occurs in 50-60% of cases of rheumatic fever and is listed as the first of the five main symptoms (carditis, polyarthritis, Sydenham chorea, etc.) in the revised Jones criteria for diagnosing rheumatic fever. Carditis is primarily endocarditis (valvular inflammation), but can also be accompanied by myocarditis and pericystitis. Valvular inflammation occurs most frequently in the mitral valve, followed by the aortic valve.

リウマチ熱に関連した心臓の病気はリウマチ性心疾患rheumatic carditisと総称されるが，これにはリウマチ性心炎とその後遺症であるリウマチ性弁膜症がある。リウマチ性心炎はリウマチ熱の50～60％に出現し，リウマチ熱診断のための改訂ジョーンズ基準における主症状5項目(心炎，多発関節炎，小舞踏病など)の第一に挙げられている。心炎は心内膜炎(弁膜炎)が主体であるが，心筋炎，心囊炎も伴っている。弁膜の炎症は僧帽弁に最も起こりやすく，ついで大動脈弁に多い。
