Asharb - Asharb

…Freeloader [Yoshio Kawakatsu]
[Arab Society]
From the end of the 7th century onwards, governors and other important figures in Arab society began to have their own private armies. The majority of the soldiers were non-Arab mawari, consisting of freed slaves and fugitive peasants, but the upper echelons included Arab asharb aṣḥāb (companions) and selected mawari, who belonged to the same tribe as the leader, and who were the leader's most trusted and confidant. The leader made a point of dining with the asharb and selected mawari, sharing wealth with them, and expecting their loyalty in times of need.
