…Sometimes, an inner shell electron that is filled in the ground state of an atom is missing in the excited state due to some reason. When this happens, there are two processes by which an excited atom can return to the ground state. One is a process in which an electron in a shallow level falls into the vacant inner shell and emits the energy difference as X-rays, and the other is a process in which this energy difference is given to another electron, which is then released outside the atom. The latter phenomenon is called the Auger effect, and the electron that is released outside the atom due to this effect is called an Auger electron. …
