Born on November 3, 1809. A local samurai from Narusawa Village, Hitachi (Ibaraki Prefecture). He studied under his relative, Kakarai Matsuyama, and later opened the Nisshinjuku School. He taught Confucianism, astronomy, and geography, and also provided military training. His students included Saito Kenmotsu and Fujita Koshiro. He died on July 14, 1859. He was 51 years old. His given name was Hisayasu. His pen name was Rikkyo. He was commonly known as Awaji. His other names included Seiken and Ranan.
