A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea, family Octopusidae. A thick, shield-shaped sea urchin, its body is covered with fine spines, and five flower-petal patterns are clearly marked on the upper surface, as if branded. It is just over 10 cm long, 3 cm thick, and less than 1 mm long. It is brownish overall, with blackish brown flower patterns. When damaged, it turns dark green. It lives on gravel bottoms in shallow seas, and is often caught in shrimp gill nets. It has the habit of placing pebbles and trash on its body to camouflage itself. It spawns from July to August. It is used as research material for developmental biology. It is found from central Honshu to Kyushu.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ウニ綱タコノマクラ科に属する海産動物。分厚い盾のような形をしたウニの仲間で、体表は細かい棘(とげ)で一面に覆われ、上面には5枚の花びら模様が、焼き印を押したようにくっきりとしるされている。長径10センチメートル余り、厚さ3センチメートル、棘長1ミリメートル未満。全体に茶褐色で花紋部分は黒褐色。傷つくと濃緑色を呈する。浅海の砂礫(されき)底に産し、エビ刺網にかかってくることが多い。体の上に小石やごみをのせてカムフラージュする習性がある。産卵期は7~8月。発生学の研究材料として利用される。本州中部から九州まで分布する。
