An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae (illustration). It is a fairly large moth, with a span of 8-10cm. Its wings are pale blue or pale yellow-green, and the hind wings are long and tail-like. Both the forewings and hindwings have small yellow eye-like patterns. They emerge twice a year, in spring and summer, but summer individuals are generally yellow-green. They are commonly found throughout the country, and often fly to lights. The larvae are green, and the dorsal surface of each segment of the thorax and abdomen is a pair of knob-like fleshy protrusions with stinging hairs. They feed on the leaves of many trees, including cherry, plum, chestnut, oak, and birch.

鱗翅目ヤママユガ科の昆虫（イラスト）。かなり大型のガで，開張8～10cm。翅は薄い青色あるいは淡い黄緑色で，後翅は尾状にのびている。前･後翅とも黄色の小さな眼状紋がある。年2回の発生で，春と夏に成虫が発生するが，夏の個体は一般に黄緑色を帯びる。全国的にごくふつうに産し，よく灯火に飛来する。幼虫は緑色，胸腹部の各節の背面は1対の瘤状の肉質突起となり，そこに刺毛が生えている。サクラ，ウメ，クリ，コナラ，カバノキなど多くの樹木の葉を食べる。
