Tobias George Smollett

Tobias George Smollett

A British novelist born in Scotland. He was popular in the mid-18th century along with S. Richardson and H. Fielding. There are many legendary elements about his life, and some of the uncertainty is due to the autobiographical elements he wove into his novel Roderick Random (1748). He dropped out of Glasgow University to become an assistant naval surgeon and served in the Cartagena Expedition, and later wrote Roderick Random while practicing surgery in London. He contributed to the development of modern realistic novels by publishing an English translation of Le Sage's The Story of Gilles Brasse, and writing a rogue story that could be considered a sequel to the former, Périgrin Picle (1751). He was also active as a journalist, but due to poor health he traveled to France and Italy in 1763 and wrote a travelogue. His greatest work is Humphrey Clinker (1771), a mixture of travelogue and epistolary. He completed the novel in Italy and died abroad, unaware of its success in his home country. It is a unique travel novel in diary form. His humor almost blossomed in this last work, but it was left unfinished. For some time after his death, it was unpopular due to its immoral subject matter, but it was highly praised for its realism as a picaresque novelist and had a great influence on Dickens, who became famous in the early 19th century.
