…(5) Elatior begonia (illustration) It was first developed in England in the 1880s by crossing Begonia socotrana with a horticultural variety of tuberous begonia. It produces relatively large flowers that are single, double, or semi-double and bloom for a long period from autumn to spring. In recent years, a group of varieties improved and bred by Otto Rieger of Germany, known as Rieger's begonia, have been widely cultivated as potted plants around the world, and with the development of technology to allow them to bloom all year round by adjusting temperature and day length, their consumption has now surpassed that of cyclamen, known as the queen of potted flowers. Many excellent varieties have also been developed at agricultural universities in the Netherlands, and are imported to Japan and cultivated commercially. …
