A marine fish belonging to the family Orcinidae, order Cetaceans, class of Osteichthyes. It inhabits the deep seas off the coast of southern Japan. It is a long, slender fish with a large head that tapers towards the tail. Both the head and body are soft and squishy, and the body is translucent. Its body color is purple-brown. Its dorsal fin has 8-10 soft rays, its caudal fin is small and connected to the anal fin with 110-130 soft rays. Its pelvic fin has 3-4 soft rays. The longest fin ray on the pelvic fin extends like a thread and reaches near the tip of the pectoral fin. Its teeth are not very developed, but it has a band of chorionic teeth on its upper jaw. It grows to about 1 meter in length. Its English name comes from its body shape, which resembles a tadpole. The family Orcinidae includes 13 species in 4 genera, and in addition to this species, Japan also has the giant orcinata and the white-spotted orcinata.
