The guardian deities of ancient Roman homes. According to myth, Jupiter once asked his mother, Lara, for help in fulfilling her desire for the nymph Juturna, whom she had been courting for some time, but she betrayed the supreme god and told Juno and Juturna about his plan. Infuriated, Jupiter ripped out Lara's tongue and ordered Mercury to take her to the underworld, but Mercury, who loved the goddess, copulated with her on the way and gave birth to the Lares. In addition to homes, it was believed that the Lares also protected roads, fields, and crossroads.
