Megistis Lavra (English spelling)

...The site has also been called the Holy Mountain (Ágion Óros) since it has been widely regarded as a holy place for the entire Orthodox world since the Middle Ages. It is unclear when the connection between Athos and monasticism began, and aside from the legends of its founding, which are filled with miracles, the most certain date for its founding is today 963, when the first full-scale co-resident monastery on Athos, Megistis Lavra, was founded with the support of the Byzantine emperor. In 971 or the following year, the First Rule (Proto Typikon), which corresponds to the Charter of Athos, was published, and it already contained the framework of the institutions we see today, including the guarantee of autonomy from the empire, the determination of the territorial boundaries, and the organizational management and discipline of the monastery.
