Korokan

Japanese:
Korokan
A mansion used to entertain foreign envoys during the Ritsuryo period. It is said to have originated from Naniwa Mansion during the reign of Suiko and Tsukushi Mansion during the reign of Jito. There were mansions in Kyoto (east and west of Shichijo-Suzaku), Naniwa, and Dazaifu (the site of Fukuoka Castle in Fukuoka City's Chuo Ward). The Korokan in Kyoto was used to entertain envoys from the Bohai Kingdom, and was abolished in the mid-10th century when the kingdom was destroyed. The one in Naniwa was used for foreign envoys entering the capital from the Saikaido, and was later converted into a provincial government office. The one in Dazaifu was also used as lodgings for foreign visitors and Japanese envoys sent to the Tang Dynasty. After the Japanese envoys were abolished, they were used to entertain Chinese merchants, inspect foreigners, and conduct trade with foreign countries. With the decline of Ritsuryo politics, this distinctive character was lost, and the mansions were abolished in the 12th century. The remains were discovered during the renovation of Fukuoka Heiwadai Baseball Stadium in 1987, and excavation revealed the remains of a large group of tiled buildings, as well as domestic clay pottery and roof tiles, as well as other artefacts such as celadon from the Yuezhou kiln series in Zhejiang Province, China, brown-glazed pottery from the Changsha kiln series in Hunan Province, white porcelain, Islamic glass and pottery, and Silla earthenware.
