A city in the Sakhalin Oblast in eastern Russia. A port city on the eastern coast of northern Sakhalin Island, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. As the center of the Okha oil field, oil and natural gas extraction is thriving, and oil is transported by rail to the port of Moskalivo, about 30 km west, from where it is shipped to various locations, and also directly to Komsomolsk-on-Amur via pipeline through the bottom of the Tatar Strait. Since the late 1970s, a plan to develop oil and natural gas on the continental shelf has been carried out in collaboration with Japan, and exploratory drilling has been successful. Other industries include ship repair, seafood processing, machine assembly and repair, and construction materials. Population: approximately 30,000.
