Manzoni's 1540 book). The oldest book that theoretically systematizes the Italian (double classification) bookkeeping method is usually the Renaissance mathematician Luca Pacioli's Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalita (1494), which systematically describes the Venetian bookkeeping method. However, of the Venetian merchants' books of the time, only the journals and ledgers of the Barbarigo and Sons firm remain, and the manuscript of Della Mercatura et del' Mercante Perfetto by Benedetto Raugeo Cotrugli is said to have been completed in 1458 (it was published in 1573).
