A commercial and industrial city in southern Texas, USA. Population 150,000 (1994). A border town facing the Rio Grande River, it is the center of wholesale and retail trade in the region spanning southern Texas and Mexico. Irrigation agriculture and livestock farming are developed in the surrounding area, and coal and oil are also produced. Industries such as clothing, electrical appliances, pottery, medical supplies, and leather products are also well developed. Mexicans settled in 1755, and it flourished as a post station on the road connecting Texas cities with Mexico. It was incorporated as a city in 1852.
