Valery Larbaud

Valery Larbaud

French author. Born as the only son of a wealthy spa owner in Vichy. From an early age, he traveled to various parts of Europe, partly to recuperate from illness, and in particular to Russia and Turkey from the summer to autumn of his 17th year, cultivating the foundations for his future as a "flagship of cosmopolitisme literature." In 1896, at the age of 15, he self-published his first collection of poems, "The Colonnade," and at the age of 20, he translated Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." In 1908, he also self-published " Poèmes par un riche amateur ," and established his literary reputation with "The Collected Works of A. O. Barnabus" in 1913. This work, which consists of one short story, a poem, and a diary, brought a breath of fresh air and a broadening of perspective to 20th century French literature, along with Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" (1913-27) and Apollinaire's "Alcohol" (1913). His early work Fermina Marquez (1911) and his collection of short stories Enfantines (1918) are also important, but the trilogy Amants, heureux amants (1921) is also important as a work that incorporates Joyce's "interior monologue." His two collections of essays The Yellow, the Blue, and the White (1927) and Under the Flag of Rome (1938) highlight the image of Larbaud as a man of letters well versed in both the past and present of Europe.
