1552‐1608 International law scholar. Born in northern Italy, he became a lawyer, but as a Protestant he fled to England to escape persecution from Catholics. Later he became a professor of Roman law at Oxford University. The main feature of his major work, De jure belli (1598), is that it takes up the theory of just war, which had previously been preached as a theological topic, as a purely legal topic, and provides an inductive argument based on documents and historical facts. There are many people, particularly in Italy, who claim that the major work De jure belli (On the Law of War and Peace) by the Dutchman Grotius, who is said to be the "father of international law," is merely a rehash of this book, and therefore that Gentilis is the true "father of international law." 1552‐1608 国際法学者。
