...The style became more formal, and the reliefs, in particular, were flat, reminiscent of shadow puppets (for example, the base reliefs at Candi Surawana). The reliefs decorating the base also began to depict narrative works such as the Arjuna Wijaya (1030) and the Bharatayuddha (1157), adaptations of the ancient Indian epic poem, the Mahabharata. Thus, Eastern Javanese art is characterized by an indigenous style and a strong literary tone.
