Reinhardt, Max
Born: September 9, 1873 in Baden
[Died] October 31, 1943. Austrian director from New York. Real name Goldmann. Recognized by O. Brahm and others, he appeared as an actor at the Deutsches Theater, but in 1903 he turned to directing, making full use of lighting, music, and sound to create imaginative plays that emphasized visual elements rather than the literary quality of the plays. He is famous for spectacular productions such as Oedipus the Great (1910) in Vienna and The Miracle (11) in London, but in the 1920s he directed many works from classical to modern times at theaters in Vienna and Berlin. After the rise of Hitler, he continued to work overseas, and in 1934 he directed the film A Midsummer Night's Dream in Hollywood. After 1938, he settled permanently in the United States.
