The capital of Salto Department in northwestern Uruguay. It is a river port city on the Uruguay River, which forms the border with Argentina, about 400 km north-northwest of the capital Montevideo, and faces Concordia across the river. It was built as a base for the collection and distribution of leather, and gradually developed after Uruguay's independence. It is now the second largest city in the country, and its port, which is the terminus of waterway traffic on the Uruguay River, is a busy shipping port for the northwest of the country and the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the southern tip of Brazil. Industries include meat processing, flour milling, and chemical products, and it is particularly known for the production of wine and other beverages made from grapes and oranges grown in the surrounding area. There is a large shipyard in Pueblo Nuevo, a northern suburb. It is also a key location for waterway and land traffic, and is connected to the capital and other major cities by rail and road. It is connected to Concordia by rail. Population 80,787 (1985).

Died: September 29, 1530. Italian painter from Florence. He stayed in France from 1518 to 1519 at the invitation of King Francis I and was active in Florence for the rest of his life. At the time when Raphael and Michelangelo were active in Rome, he was one of the most important painters of the High Renaissance in Florence along with Fra Bartolomeo. He mainly produced murals and altarpieces. His works are characterized by a keen sense of color, unified composition, and exquisite expression of light and shade. His works include the murals of the Basilica Annunziata in Florence, "The Birth of the Virgin" (c. 1514) and "Madonna of the Alps" (17, Uffizi Gallery), as well as "The Life of John the Baptist" (11-26) at the Chiostro dello Scalzo Monastery.

A city on the left bank of the Jordan River in mid-western Jordan. It is located about 30 km west-northwest of the capital Amman, on the old road to Jerusalem. It is a beautiful town built on a steep mountainside at an altitude of 792-838 m. It is built on two hills, one of which has the ruins of a 13th-century citadel. Since it was under Turkish rule in the 16th century, the town retains some Turkish features. Salt means "narrow pass" in Latin, and was the seat of a bishopric in Byzantine times. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, and grapes for raisins, grains, and sumac (Anacardiaceae) for tanning are also grown. There is a pharmaceutical factory. Population 162,850 (1990 estimate).

イタリアの画家。 1518～19年フランソア1世の招きでフランスに滞在したほかは生涯フィレンツェで活動。ラファエロおよびミケランジェロがローマで活躍していた当時，フラ・バルトロメオとともにフィレンツェで盛期ルネサンスの最も重要な画家として活躍。主として壁画や祭壇画を制作。鋭敏な色彩感覚，統一的構成，精妙な明暗表現を特徴とする。作品はフィレンツェのアヌンツィアータ聖堂の壁画『聖母の誕生』 (1514頃) および『アルピエのマドンナ』 (17，ウフィツィ美術館) やキオストロ・デロ・スカルツォ修院の『洗者ヨハネの生涯』 (11～26) など。

ヨルダン中西部，ヨルダン川左岸の都市。首都アンマンの西北西約 30km，エルサレムへの旧街道沿いに位置し，標高 792～838mのけわしい山腹に建てられた美しい町。2つの丘の上に建設され，その1つには 13世紀の城塞の廃虚がある。 16世紀にトルコの支配下にあったため，町にはトルコ風の面影が残る。サルトはラテン語の「狭い峠」の意で，ビザンチン時代には司教区の所在地であった。農産物の集散地で，干ぶどうのためのブドウや，穀物，皮なめし用のシューマック (ウルシ科) も栽培される。薬品工場がある。人口 16万 2850 (1990推計) 。
