1873-1950 Finnish linguist.
Born October 22, 1873. Known for his comparative research on Altaic languages. Served as Japanese envoy to Japan from 1919 to 1930. During this time he studied Korean and Japanese, and compiled works such as "A Comparison of Altaic Languages and Japanese." After returning to Japan he became a professor at the University of Helsinki. He was also well known as an Esperanto scholar. Died November 25, 1950, aged 77. His works include "Research on the Etymology of Korean Language" and "A Dictionary of the Kalmyk Language."

1873年10月22日生まれ。アルタイ諸語の比較研究で知られる。大正8年から昭和5年まで駐日公使。この間,朝鮮語,日本語をまなび,「アルタイ諸語と日本語との比較」などをまとめる。帰国後ヘルシンキ大教授。エスペラント学者としても著名。1950年11月25日死去。77歳。著作に「朝鮮語語源研究」「カルムイク語辞典」など。
