Born October 22, 1873. Known for his comparative research on Altaic languages. Served as Japanese envoy to Japan from 1919 to 1930. During this time he studied Korean and Japanese, and compiled works such as "A Comparison of Altaic Languages and Japanese." After returning to Japan he became a professor at the University of Helsinki. He was also well known as an Esperanto scholar. Died November 25, 1950, aged 77.
