A general term for thick, sweet liquids. It is made by dissolving sugar and adding flavorings, coffee, tea, gum arabic, etc. The simplest way is to dissolve sugar and boil it down. Fruit syrup was originally made by adding sugar to the juice of fresh fruit, but many products use colorings and flavorings such as strawberry, melon, orange, and lemon in the sugar liquid. Grenadine syrup is a type of fruit syrup that is characterized by its pomegranate flavor and bright red color and is used in cocktails. Gum syrup is a colorless, unscented syrup made by adding gum arabic to sugar liquid, and is mainly used in cocktails. Maple syrup is made by concentrating the sap of sugar maples from Canada and the northern United States, and is a flavorful, opaque liquid. It is used on pancakes and other foods. Other types include coffee syrup, which is made from coffee. Syrups are used to sweeten cocktails and drinks, as well as in confectionery ingredients and desserts.
