Located in a mountain gorge in northern Tanzania, East Africa, this is the world's oldest Early Paleolithic site. More than 100 fossil human bones were discovered here, including Zinjanthropus boijii in 1959 and Homo habilis in 1961, by the British scientist Leakey. Along with fossils of hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and fish, a chopper (a Paleolithic tool made by roughly chipping one end of a pebble) was also discovered, making this site one of the oldest known sites of humans using tools.

東アフリカ，タンザニア北部の山峡にある世界最古の前期旧石器時代の遺跡。英国のリーキーによって1959年ジンジャントロプス・ボイジイ，1961年にホモ・ハビリスの化石人類の骨が100体以上も発見された。またカバ，ワニ，魚などの化石とともに，礫(れき)の一端をあらく打ち欠いたチョッパー（旧石器）が発見され，道具を使用した最古の人類の遺跡の一つとされている。
