Luca Pacioli
Around 1445 - 1517
Italian mathematician of the Renaissance. Born in Borgo San Sepolcro, a small town north of Rome, he studied mathematics while working in commerce. He was a Franciscan friar. As a mathematics teacher, he taught at the courts of Italian cities and at the University of Perugia. He was invited to the court of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan in 1497, where he met Leonardo da Vinci, and it is well known that they traveled together to Florence in 1499. He later lectured at the University of Pisa and the University of Bologna.

ルネサンス期イタリアの数学者。ローマの北方の小都市ボルゴ・サン・セポルクロに生まれ,商業に従事するかたわら数学を学んだ。フランシスコ会修道士であった。数学教師としてイタリア諸都市の宮廷,ペルージア大学などで教えた。1497年,ミラノ公ルドビーコ・スフォルツァの宮廷に招かれ,そこでレオナルド・ダ・ビンチと知り合い,99年にはフィレンツェへともに旅したことは有名である。その後,ピサ大学,ボローニャ大学で講義をしている。
