...The names Oban Hoji and Obanryoanshushoku are also found, and it seems that each had a certain share of duties. The term "Obanmai" appears from the mid-Kamakura period onwards, and this has been understood to have been a replacement for the service of the guards in the form of payment in kind, but there is also the view that it was something that the Toneri (headman) collected from the peasants as a share of the profits. The terms Oban Toneri and Obanryo Zassho appear in historical documents from the Northern and Southern Court period, but it is thought that by this time their historical role had essentially ended....
