Ramus, Petrus

Ramus, Petrus
[Born] 1515. Picardi, Cu
[Died] August 26, 1572. Paris. French humanist and logician. French name Pierre de La Ramée. He was banned from lecturing at the University of Paris because he opposed Aristotle and his traditional interpretation. He created dialectical logic not as a method of inquiry, but as a method of argumentation that adopted Cicero's rhetoric. He divided the method of argumentation into two: the natural method (for intellectuals) that descends from the universal to the particular, and the method for the masses that uses techniques exemplified by rhetoric and poetics. His successors were called the Ramites. He converted to Protestantism around 1561, but was unable to escape persecution from academia and the Catholic Church, and was killed in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. His major works are Dialecticae partitiones (1543) and Dialectique (1555).
