A former town in Nakakoma County in western Yamanashi Prefecture. The eastern part is an alluvial fan of the Midai River, a tributary of the Kamanashi River, and is a region of fruit trees, including grapes and peaches, which were converted from mulberry fields. The center is Ogasawara, which developed along the Sunshin Highway (now National Route 52), and is known as the birthplace of Koshu merchants, who peddled clothing and other goods. The textile industry is active here. In April 2003, it merged with Hatta Village, Shirane Town, Ashiyasu Village, Wakakusa Town, and Kosei Town to form Minami-Alps City. 42.57 km2 .
