Potala Palace - Po-ta-la

Japanese: ポタラ宮 - ぽたらきゅう(英語表記)Po-ta-la
Potala Palace - Po-ta-la

The Chinese translation is Potala Palace. The palace of the Dalai Lama is located on the Red Mountain in the northwest of Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. It is commonly known as Tse Potala. Potala Mountain is derived from Poalaka, the place where the Bodhisattva Kannon lives in South India. It is said to have been founded by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century, who was revered as an incarnation of Kannon, and so his palace was called Potala. The current Potala Palace was built by the 5th Dalai Lama from 1645, and took more than 50 years to complete. Since then, it has been the central religious and political institution as the royal palace of the successive Dalai Lamas. The palace is a fortress along the slope of the mountain, with a total of 13 floors and a length of 400 meters. The historic centre in which the palace is located is registered as a World Heritage Site (World Cultural Heritage).
