Giovanbattista Ramusio
1485‐1557
Venetian humanist, historian, and geographer. He held many public offices in the Venetian Republic, most notably as senate secretary from 1515 onwards. He was fluent in Latin and Greek, and published works by Quintilian and Livy through Aldus Bookshop. He also published an important collection of travel writings, Delle navigationi et viaggi (Voyages and Travels), in three volumes (1550-59). This is a fundamental document on the Age of Discovery. ベネチアの人文主義者,歴史家,地理学者。ベネチア共和国で多くの官職につき,とくに1515年以降元老院書記官を務めた。ラテン語,ギリシア語に精通し,クインティリアヌスやリウィウスの刊本をアルドゥス書店から刊行したほか,重要な旅行記の集大成である《航海と旅行Delle navigationi et viaggi》3巻(1550‐59)を刊行した。これは大航海時代に関する基本文献である。【清水 広一郎】
